Cutting edge innovation and high performance designs ensure we keep pace with our inspirational Noble Riders. They are the real life testers of our products and fly the flag for Noble at events. In anticipation of one of the biggest events of the season, Badminton Horse Trials, we asked our Noble riders; Wills Oakden, Willa Newton, Simon Grieve and James Sommerville what their go to products are and how their preparations have been going.

Wills Oakden makes his debut at Badminton this year. He has given us an insight into what Noble products have been beneficial in his preparation for the event and what it means to be competing in his first Badminton.

Could you tell us a little bit about your horse, Cooley Ramiro?

Cooley Ramiro aka Ernie is a 12yrs old gelding by Ramiro B, owned by the Balcarres Eventing Syndicate. This is his first 5*. Ernie is such a laid back character in the stable who spends most of the time conserving his energy by sleeping. You will struggle to find a horse with a bigger heart.

What have yours and his preparations been in the build up to Badminton?

We have kept his routine the same with exception of increased canter work. His training routine has worked for us up to now so I haven't changed anything.

What does it mean for you to be competing at Badminton?

I'm very proud to be going on this journey with the owners. It’s been a childhood dream of mine to compete at Badminton.  From an very early age I have obsessed over both Burghley and Badminton and was even known to have built the Cross Country replica course in the living room using a blue blanket as the water jump.  It feels very special and I'm extremely excited for the week ahead.

What Noble essentials will you be taking with you?

Two very essential bags we will be taking with us are my 5.2 Hands Duffle™ Bag for all my clothes and Sarah Murray the head groom will have her Ringside™ Pack for all the important grooming tools.

Also, the Stable Insulated Vest is always my go-to Gilet, it’s smart and comfortable to wear at all times.

Our Noble Rider Simon Grieve will be making his second Badminton appearance with Drumbilla Metro. The Stable Insulated Vest and Perfect Fit 3 Season Gloves have been integral to his preparation back at the yard for Badminton.

Could you tell us a little bit about your horse, Drumbilla Metro?

I have ridden him since he was a 7 year old. One of his biggest results was coming  10th at Bramham. His first Burghley was 2 years ago, then his first Badminton was last year. He is grumpy but an out and out trier, my partner in crime. He’s only little but a star all the same.

What have yours and his preparations been in the build up to Badminton?

He has been to Oasby, Lincoln and Burnham Market and the events have built up in difficulty. He has had plenty of skinny practice with Caroline Moore and Show Jumping with Holly Smith. I have taken up swimming in the last year so tend to go four mornings a week, then come back with croissants for the rest of the team. I have been having lots of blueberries and smoothies. I also cycle a lot, especially at events, and play squash.

What does it mean for you to be competing at Badminton?

It’s a childhood dream!

What Noble essentials will you be taking with you?

I’ll be taking my trusty base layer and three season alloy gloves- they are durable and strong, as well as looking super smart and professional. The Stable Insulated Vest is my go-to Noble product at the yard. I think it is so smart and comfortable and goes really well with my Caspian Quarter Zip top which I absolutely love.

James Sommerville is our final Noble rider competing at Badminton this year. We caught up to find out how his preparations have been going.

Could you tell us a little more about your horse, Talent?

I have had Talent from a four-year-old and produced him up through the grades. He was bought from Astrid Bolton, who is based near Blackpool. Talent has always been sharp and quirky but has mellowed a little over the years. He has always been a fantastic jumper and has always climbed the standings after the dressage phase. This will be our third Badminton together and last year we won the best owner rider prize. In 2018 Talent represented Team GB at Strzegom as part of the Nations Cup team finishing 5th individually.

What have yours and his preparations been in the build up to Badminton?

Preparations for this years Badminton have gone very well. He has run well in all his preparation runs and we’ve been training on the flat with Judy Bradwell, where we have been working on his way of going and the test movements. He has been doing plenty of hill and canter work as well as hacking out. I’m very confident in his fitness.

What does it mean for you to be competing at Badminton?

It’s means a great deal. Badminton is the pinnacle of Eventing and it is where every rider wants to compete. Getting there alone is a great achievement and I hope there are many more Badminton appearances to come.

What Noble essentials will you be taking with you and why?

My favourite Noble products that I will take with me to Badminton are the Softshell Breeches, the Bramham Fleece Vest, Show Ready Leather Gloves and if the heavens open the Endurance Jacket is a must. I am very grateful for the support I receive from Noble and their fantastic products.

Unfortunately, our final Noble rider, Willa Newton, expected to be competing at Badminton has had to withdraw from this years event as Chance Remark was not feeling quite right. It is gutting, particularly with all the hard work that has gone in to getting there but we have so much respect for Willa and the team, always putting the horse’s welfare before anything else. We wish her the best of luck and are sure we will see her back competing at her best at Badminton for many years to come.
